Tolstoy and Mashallah show their professionalism with maiden double at Keeneland

Team Walsh enjoyed a memorable afternoon at Keeneland as exciting juveniles Tolstoy and Mashallah both broke their maidens in impressive fashion.

The first of the pair came courtesy of Tolstoy, who became our first two-year-old winner of the year with a determined and courageous debut success under Flavien Prat for owners Arindel. At first glance, the task appeared a daunting one for the inexperienced colt. Tolstoy found himself with around five lengths to make up as the field began to increase the tempo. Still learning his craft approaching the home turn, the debutant was ridden patiently by Prat, who allowed the colt time to organise himself.

Turning for home, Tolstoy began to understand the assignment. Responding gamely under pressure, he produced a relentless late surge and showed tremendous heart inside the final furlong. With every stride he closed rapidly on his rivals before storming home to get up in the shadow of the post and prevail by a narrow margin.

It was a performance full of promise and professionalism from the young colt, whose determination and finishing effort suggested there is considerable upside still to come.

Thankfully, we did not have to wait long to complete the double, as Mashallah followed in emphatic style later on the card. The daughter of freshman sire Maxfield delivered a performance of real quality to earn herself TDN Rising Star honours, further enhancing the remarkable start Maxfield has made with his first crop of two-year-olds.

Under a confident ride from Joel Rosario, Mashallah broke sharply from the gates and immediately took control of proceedings. Setting strong fractions throughout, the filly travelled powerfully and comfortably dictated the pace from the front.

At no stage did she look vulnerable. Turning into the stretch, Mashallah quickly put the race to bed and extended her advantage with authority, drawing clear to score by an impressive four lengths for owners JR Ranch. The ease of victory and professionalism she displayed marked her down as a filly with significant potential, and one who could quickly develop into an exciting prospect.
