Brendan Walsh Racing had a successful opening day at Kentucky Downs Racing. The team sent out six runners for two wins, one second and three thirds. This amassed to just under $500,000 for our owners.
The first of our two winners was Oscar Season (Oscar Performance x Same Cross), a three-year-old colt owned by Airdrie Stud and Pocket Aces Racing. The chestnut colt broke a half stride slow and settled into stride towards the back of the field. He made a sweeping move around the field as they turned for home to take the lead with one furlong to run. Oscar Season crossed the finish an easy 2.5 length winner under jockey Luan Machado, leaving no doubts of his quality and potential for this Autumn!
The winning connections have been very patient with this colt and he certainly repaid them today! Congratulations to all involved.
Irish Aces (Mshawish x Nimble Foot (IRE)) secured his first Stakes win with a gritty run in the Big Ass Fans Tapit Stakes. The four-year-old gelding traveled just behind the leader for most of the One Mile Seventy Yard event. Jockey Tyler Gaffalione allowed the gelding to relax and establish a lovely rhythm throughout the running before he angled Oscar Season out to make his run down the stretch. The leader proved a tough competitor, which made for an exciting stretch run as Irish Aces showed his grit to ultimately prevail by a head on the wire.
This gelding has been knocking on the door for a win all year and we couldn’t be more excited to provide a huge winner in the feature for Owner Pocket Aces Racing.
