East Avenue Battles Back to Capture Grade 3 Salvator Mile

East Avenue returned to the winner’s circle in dramatic fashion on Saturday, showing tremendous courage and determination to land the Grade 3 Salvator Mile Stakes at Monmouth Park in a thrilling photo finish.

The imposing son of Medaglia d’Oro settled in a nice rhythm following the pack as the leader carved out solid early fractions, posting an opening quarter-mile in 23.56 seconds. As the race began to unfold approaching the far turn, East Avenue loomed into contention as the field straightened for home and set his sights on the well-fancied Bishops Bay.

What followed was a stretch battle worthy of the Grade 3 contest. With Bishops Bay refusing to yield, East Avenue dug deep and was not going down without a fight. Tyler Gaffalione knew not to give up and remained aggressive the whole way up the stretch. Stride by stride, he wore down the favorite before thrusting his head in front where it mattered most, prevailing in a heart-stopping photo finish.

The victory was a thoroughly satisfying one for all involved and a reminder of the quality and resilience that East Avenue possesses. After some near misses and tough battles, it was a welcome sight to see the talented colt get his head back in front once again. The polished performance earned East Avenue his career-best Beyer number of 105, indicating an upward trajectory from here and hopefully, the start of an exciting year for him.

Huge congratulations to owners and breeders Godolphin, whose patience and unwavering belief in East Avenue were rewarded with this deserved graded stakes success.
